"The Family as a Regulator of the Brain"
Stress researcher, Esther Sternberg, M.D., writes “Emotions are what we live and die for. Diseases are what we die from.” Neuroscience supports this idea by demonstrating the powerful impact of the emotional system on psyche and soma. Bowen theory is unique in conceptualizing relationship processes within family and non-family groups that govern the emotional system of an individual. Relationship systems can nurture or erode the functioning of their members. Through lecture and clinical illustration, Dr. Kerr will describe the relationship processes that isolate and overwhelm people, erode their functioning and the processes that enhance the functioning of oneself and others. Human beings have precious little emotional autonomy, but people can gain more autonomy by comprehending the forces that constrain it. Dr. Platek will present on kin as a special class of familiar individuals. Because of failure to recognize and respond appropriately to kin (and non-kin, respectively), evolution should have favored redundant mechanisms for the detection of kin and differentiation of kin from non-kin. Dr. Platek uses functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate participants’ responses to familiar kin relative to familiar non-kin. His findings suggest that the extended face processing network is implicated in differentiating kin from other classes of faces. This differentiation is a unique implication for research and may have implications for triggering emotional responses in the individual and the system.
